AI tech pack generator vs studio

AI tech pack generator or a studio? An honest comparison.

AI tech pack generators are quick and cheap, and for some jobs they are enough. Here is what they do well, where factories push back, and why a pack drawn, measured and checked by two people costs more.

What a studio adds

Read, drawn and checked by people.

A generator fills a template. A studio reads your brief, asks the questions a factory would ask and checks every measurement.

  • Overhead view of a team around a table with laptops, printed flat sketches, fabric swatches and coffee
Our team reads itReading a brief together
  • Hands pointing at printed flat sketches and color swatch strips on a white table
    Flats drawnMarking up printed flats
  • Hands measuring across the shoulder of a fitted top with a tape measure

The fair view

What generators do well, and where factories push back.

A factory quotes, samples and cuts from the file. The questions on the right are the ones a sample room asks of any pack; they are the parts a generator cannot check for you, because they depend on the real garment.

Where a generator helps

Speed and structure

  • A first structure, fastThe sections a tech pack needs, in a sensible order, without waiting for a designer.
  • A sketch to talk aboutTurning a mood or an idea into a first drawing you can react to.
  • Consistent formattingThe same layout across many styles, useful for internal reviews.
  • Low cost while you decideCheap to try while you are still choosing what to make.
  • Learning what goes in a packA quick way to see what a factory will expect to read.

Where factories push back

Numbers and construction

  • Measurements that did not come from a garmentA sample room checks numbers against a sample or a pattern. Estimated numbers do not survive that check.
  • Points of measure without a measuring method“Chest” means nothing until it says where it is measured from.
  • Tolerances that ignore the fabricA rib cuff and a woven cuff cannot share one tolerance.
  • Construction that cannot be sewn as drawnA seam that ends nowhere, a pocket crossing a side seam with no note.
  • Trims without size, finish or color reference“Zip” is not something a factory can buy.
  • Front and back views that do not agreePocket on the front, missing from the back, and a question from the factory.

Using a generator already? Keep it. The fastest fix is often our team checking the draft: our tech pack review marks every gap by severity, or run the free tech pack checker yourself first.

Three ways to get a pack

Generator, generator plus review, or studio.

There is a middle option. If you already have a generated pack, start with a review; if you have nothing yet, a studio pack starts from your garment.

Generators differ and change quickly: this compares the typical workflow, not a named product. Check what your tool does before you rely on it.

The team behind every pack

Real people draw every tech pack.

Our studio team in the USA drafts every flat, measurement and note, and answers your revision rounds by email. No template generator, no guesswork.

  1. Team at a table reviewing printed sportswear flats and color swatches, with the designs on a screen behind Reading a brief with flats and swatches
    01

    We read your brief

Sketch, reference photo or sample: someone on our team reads it and replies within 24 hours with the tier, the price and the timeline.

  2. Tech pack page with front, side and back technical flats of a raglan active t-shirt Example page
    02

    We draw the flats

A technical designer draws every view to proportion, with numbered callouts for each seam, stitch and trim.

  3. Vest tech pack page with front and back flats, a graded measurement table and a bill of materials Example page
    03

    We grade and spec

Measurements graded across your sizes with a tolerance on every line, plus the bill of materials and construction notes.

  4. Technical designer kneeling to measure the inseam of a fit model with a tape measure Measuring the inseam on a fit model
    04

A second person checks every measurement

Before delivery, someone who did not draw the pack checks every point of measure against the flats. Then 2–3 revision rounds by email.

Example pages are shown with the brand removed. Photos show the kind of studio work behind each step.

Why a studio pack costs more

The price is people and time.

A studio tech pack is $299 per style because five steps are done by people. Each one is there to stop a sample coming back wrong.

  1. 01Someone reads your briefand asks the questions a factory would ask, before anything is drawn.
  2. 02A technical designer draws the flatsto proportion, every view, with a callout for each seam, stitch and trim.
  3. 03Measurements from your garmentgraded across your sizes, with a tolerance that suits the fabric on every line.
  4. 04A second person checksevery point of measure against the flats, someone who did not draw the pack.
  5. 05Revision rounds by email2–3 rounds included, factory questions after delivery covered inside them.

When to pay for people

  • The first sample with a new factory

It can produce the structure and a first draft. Whether the result is factory-ready depends on the measurements, tolerances and construction notes, and those need someone who knows the real garment to check them.

No. Our studio team in the USA draws every flat, writes every measurement and note, and a second person checks every measurement before delivery.

Yes. Our tech pack review reads it the way a factory sample room does and marks every gap by severity, for $99 per style, with a fix-it option at $149 per style.

Because people do the work: someone reads your brief, a technical designer draws the flats, measurements are graded with a tolerance on every line, a second person checks them, and 2–3 revision rounds are included. Collections of 3 or more styles are $249 per style.
